SOM is a school administration system for secondary education (Dutch high schools) in the Netherlands. The application registers grades, attendance, billing, education and final exams.
A fine-grained authorization implementation ensures that only the people that need particular information can see it. For example teachers will only be able to see the students they teach, guidance counselors will only be able to see the students they guide and administrative users will only see the administration parts, not the (private) guidance documents.
SOM has been in production since 2006 and was one of the first Apache Wicket applications put into production by Topicus. It currently serves over 5000 concurrent users and reaches 30000 requests per minute daily.
Development of SOM (then named Vocus) started with Wicket 1.0 and has followed all major released ever since. It has inspired many features of Wicket, for example the request logger, the render strategies, the SWARM and WASP security framework and many more. Without SOM, Wicket would not be where it currently stands.
